Here is a small selection of my short stories. (Funny Hat was included in the Best Canadian Short Stories 2017, Mother was in the Best Canadian Short Stories 2023.)

After the wedding we drove to his parents’ country house in a horse-drawn carriage. It was right before dawn.

The morning feels like the inside of a mouth, hot and humid already. At first, the boy thinks he is still dreaming when he sees a mermaid sitting on a rock in the shade.

It is the time between the end of the night and the beginning of the morning, not an actual hour, just that feeling of one thing spilling into the next.

When I could finally stand up, my husband ushered me out of that room.

I was wearing bloody pads. I was numb. Anesthetic: mind, body.

On the weekend, Helen picks me up to go and look at the new place she found. It’s an apartment with linoleum floors, small windows high up in the walls, like windows in basements.
